Direction

The Direction course trains students for a professional career as a music theater director. The extensive musical, theoretical and practical training offers students the opportunity to learn the role of a self-reliant and independent director.
At the center of the direction course are compositional technique, ear training, piano, musical form, acoustics and music history. As well as the practical core lessons in direction, the essential theoretical elements of dramaturgy, stage and costume design are also taught. Lessons in acting, elocution, video, lighting and production comprise further important artistic fundamentals. Italian and elective subjects in music physiology and related key competencies (legal studies, self management) complement the course. The acquired skills are practically furthered and trialed through direction projects, internships and workshops.

As part of a highly practical approach and with the goal of promoting the individual artistic development, direction and voice students can display their work in numerous stage projects. Performances take place, amongst others in cooperation with Komische Oper, Staatsoper at Schiller Theater, Deutsche Oper (e. g. in the “Neue Szenen” series), HAU (Hebbel am Ufer) and Tempodrom. Further cooperation exists in the area of direction with Bayreuth Festival as well as the stage design courses at Berlin University of the Arts, Technical University Berlin and Berlin Weißensee School of Art.
