Prof. Nicolas Altstaedt

  • Born in Heidelberg, the son of German-French parents
  • Studies at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin as one of the last students of Prof. Boris Pergamenschikow; completes his studies at the Hanns Eisler School with Prof. Eberhard Feltz
  • 2009: "Borletti Buitoni Trust Fellowship"; 2010: Distinction from the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award at the Wiener Musikverein; receives various first prizes at international competitions; 2010–2012: participates in the BCC New Generation Artist Program
  • Since 2012: Artistic Director of the Kammermusikfest Lockenhaus/Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival
  • Beginning in the 2015/16 season: Artistic Director of the HaydnPhilharmonie in Eisenstadt as the successor to Ádám Fischer
  • Artist in Spotlight at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam during the 2017/18 season; 2018/19: Artist in Residence at the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in Hamburg
  • Guest appearances as a soloist worldwide, among others with the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the Czech Philharmonic, the Finnish Radio Symphony, the Melbourne and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras; collaborations with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Andrew Davis, Andrey Boreyko, Vladimir Fedosseyev, Thomas Hengelbrock, Thomas Dausgaard, Lahav Shani, Emmanuel Krivine, Giovanni Antonini, and Andrea Marcon
  • Regular concerts as a chamber music artist with Fazil Say, Alexander Lonquich, Janine Jansen, Vilde Frang, Pekka Kuusisto, Jonathan Cohen, Antoine Tamestit, Lawrence Power, and Quatuor Ébène, among others at the Salzburger Mozartwoche, the Salzburg Festival, at the Verbier, Lucerne, Gstaad, SchleswigHolstein, Rheingau, Utrecht, and Stavanger Festivals, and at the BBC Proms and the Musikfest Bremen
  • Premiere performances of works by, among others, Thomas Adès, Jörg Widmann, Thomas Larcher, Nico Muhly, Fazil Say, and Esa-Pekka Salonen
  • New works have been composed for Nicolas Altstaedt by among others Sebastian Fagerlund, Thomas Larcher, Bryce Dessner, and Helena Winkelman
  • BBC Music Magazine Concerto Award 2017 for a recording of the cello concerti of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach with Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen for Hyperion Records
  • 2017: recital CD of cello sonatas and with Fazil Say for Warner Classics 
  • Since winter semester 2016/17, professor for cello at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin
