Composition

• Advanced musical ability in the programme subject which must be demonstrated in the audition exam
• Foreign applicants who do not have a German university entry permission must possess sufficient knowledge of the German language. 
  The following requirements must both be met in order to provide proof:
  1. Presentation of a language certificate of level B 2.2 according to the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Language certificates must be submitted during enrolment at the latest.
  2. In the music theory examination, applicants must prove that they have sufficient programme-related German language skills for communication and study.

For the pre-selection the platform muvac is used.

On muvac you can upload PDF, PNG and JPG files as well as video and audio recordings in your application.

Based on the uploaded files and audio/video recordings the pre-selection is made subsequent to the application period.

• Several own compositions with varying instrumentation in the form of written, fixed scores
• Audio- /visual recordings of own works

In the audition exam, the applicant must display their special compositional talent, specific abilities, elocution and knowledge.

This includes:

• presentation of several compositions with varying instrumentation in the form of written, fixed scores, which must be submitted with the application. An additional presentation of sound and/or video recording of own works (also to be submitted with application documents) is also possible
• demonstration of general musical ability (see compulsory subjects compositional technique and ear training)
• ear training oral
  • repeat (sing) short melodic passages heard
  • beat a notated rhythm with ties and/or syncopation
  • determine and sing major and minor scales as well as modal scales (ascending and descending)
  • repeat, determine and sing intervals in an octave (ascending and descending)
  • repeat, determine and sing triads and dominant seventh chords with inversions (ascending and descending)
  • repeat, determine and sing other diatonic 4-tone chords and dominant ninth chords
  • repeat (sing) dissonant triads and 4-note chords
  • sight-read (sing) a choir part of medium difficulty in treble clef and/or bass clef
• elementary knowledge of organology
• knowledge of important historical and contemporary musical works

• one baroque solo work (e.g. three part Invention by J. S. Bach)
• one solo work of the First Viennese School (e.g. sonata first movement by Beethoven)
• one work of the 19^th to the 21^st century, can be an own composition or chamber music

• Determining and notating triads and tetrads
• Realizing a short figured bass exercise and/or a harmonic progression according to Roman numerals and/or German functions
• Harmonizing a short chorale melody in 17th/18th century style (cantional or chorale style)
• Harmonic analysis of a musical example or excerpt

• Notating an atonal series of intervals
• Determining triads and tetrads in various positions (including open position)
• Determining modes
• Rhythm dictation
• One-part memory dictation
• Two-part polyphonic dictation
• Harmonic dictation: notation of the outer voices as well as figured bass, Roman numerals or German functions

• Applicants for undergraduate studies who have already studied at a RKM-recognizes German music school and are applying to transfer to HFM are exempt from taking the exams in piano, composition, and ear training if they are able to provide a matriculation certificate/certificate of enrolment.
